Diesel price tracker

Didn't want to start a new thread so thought I would post this here.

Contractors around here took to adding a fuel surcharge on their invoices a couple of years ago when fuel prices became more volatile after Putin kicked off.
Does that happen any where else??
In 2022 this was as much as 65 ppl for every litre used. They say the per acre price charged includes the first 50ppl for fuel ⛽.

We had our contractor bill lately, a five figure bill which includes a charge for just under 3000 litres of fuel used by the forager, rake tractors and trailers, handle bucket raking.

In March 23 he came with a tractor and trailer to cart some muck, the invoice shows13.5 hours at £36 per hour and used 251 litres of fuel at 92 ppl which is 18.6 litres per hour.
At silage time he charged £48 per hour for the same tractor and trailer and 25ppl for fuel . Both work out to about £53 per hour.

I queried why 92p when we were buying fuel from the same wholesalers at 78p in march 23.
Some what irate, he came back to say he had paid 84p but added a bit for adblu to it!
I suggested that why stop there? Put more on for engine oil, service and tyre wear as well.

Not very happy about this as we paid an average of about 7 p a litre on 3000litresl ast summer . He did say, oh we also buck raked some grass carried in by wagon and not charged you.
In the end we will settle the bill as is but I have told him that:-if he wants the work next year.
1) I don't won't a five figure invoice in January, I would rather pay after each job or even a flat monthly fee and balance up at the year end.
2) no fuel surcharge next year you price it per acre including the fuel used on that job.

What happens in other areas??

Back on thread Derv upto 116.68 next week plus vat

I wouldn’t be happy either if a contractor let a years worth of work pile up before billing for it. Fortunately I tend to get bills within a week or two of work being done.

Are the contractors doing a lot of work for you away from your home farm? Anyone that comes here arrives full and leaves full- my diesel so no surcharges etc. A couple of years back we had a combine contractor that wanted to cart diesel ~15 miles to ours instead of filling up at our tank for reasons I never could quite work out.

I suppose providing your own diesel and/or your own bowser would be one sort of answer.

His reason/ justification for sending the bill in December , was that that's when farmers get your single payments so you have the money to pay.

I don't need him to tell me what to do with the SFP.

Contractor mate of mine bills every job or every 2 or 3 jobs apart from one customer who has a bill in return, they settle up at the end of the year. He always uses his own diesel, back in the day it would be 5 gallon drums then a couple of 40 gall drums and a pump. I never understood the arrive full, leave full gig. When I worked for him we could go an hour to next job burning 25 l/h on each tractor and leave that, only going next door. Customer wouldn't be happy paying for 100lit he didn't get use of. I know he put the rates up when diesel went up, wonder if they've come down again:unsure:

I know what you mean, but it probably all evens out over the long run. The customer will always end up paying for the contractor getting to you, one way or another and it saves them a job mucking on with a bowser etc.

He stopped using in farm diesel a few years ago after he had dirt in a fuel system on a hire tractor which cost about four grand to repair the pump etc. insists on using his own fuel.
That way is suppose we pay for the fuel to come here and go from here

The other issue with using farmer's fuel, apart from dirt, is access to tanks. If you're doing a field job like muck spreading, you often don't see the farm yard. I expect a lot of contractor's tackle doesn't return home every night mid season so it's no bother to fill up at the same time as collecting the drivers. As long as the pi$$ isn't being taken re fuel surcharges or customers expecting a long travel for an hour's work then fuel should be supplied and priced in the job IMO

Our contractor arrives full and leaves full. He's got 3 outfits so they've generally come from nearby.
He arrived from next door at first cut which should have been grand, but the neighbour didn't have enough diesel to fill everyone 🙄 So everyone filled up to start with and the litres got knocked off the bill.

Sorry, just seen this again 😳
No mention of Adblue at all. And we don't provide it .....

And last week's price for 4000l of red was 72.49.
Quoted around 77p today, so a wise buy 🙂
That was good, I paid 76 for 1250 of red delivered 3 weeks ago. Ended up with 1400 and thought that was good as it seems to be up to 80+ by now, must be quantity discount  Got 70 kero at the same time, 69ppl
