JD 6410 starting issue

opininionated

On final warning
It normally cranks over as soon as the key is turned.
Lately it has taken to hesitating when the key is turned to start position, at first instinct caused me to let the key click back, check neutral act etc, then try again. Almost by accident I discovered that if I turn the key to start and hold it there then after a few seconds she cranks and starts normally.
Does Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Bad contacts in ignition switch maybe, I've had them when they only crank when the key is released slightly, and find burnt contacts in switch

I have done a bit of diagnostics !
The tractor stopped starting on the key, so I exposed the back of the key terminals and did a continuity check on the key in various positions and it seemed ok. So I did a continuity test on the wire from the key to the starter motor and sure enough there was a fault. I put a temporary wire in to connect and hey presto, she started on the key. I just find it odd that the wire appears ok where it goes into the loom and also where it comes out of the loom, how can a wire fail in the protection of the loom?
does anyone know if the wire goes directly from the key to the solenoid on a 6410, or does it pass through other components on its route?
while looking I noticed that it appeared Roland had been busy near the alternator, does anyone know what these wires are for, could they be connected to the starting issue?

Is there not a safety switch of some kind so you don't start it in gear?
That would be my first thing to check

What's that in your hand?

Looks to be the standard little and large to the alternator, a 2 wire connector and one more to something up top
