Machinery purchase prices

opininionated

On final warning
Ive not been in the market for buying farm machinery for 10 or 15 years, but it was nice to be recognised and welcomed onto the stand of the local J D stand at the ploughing match yesterday, good to catch up with the staff still there and hear of the ones that had retired / moved on.
Hasn't machinery gone up in price though? 240k for a potato harvester, it looked splendid, and I was told it had a computer! I used to run grimme 1700, from memory I paid 25k for itwhen it was 4 years old, it could clear some spuds, if anything too quickly for the grader to keep up with.

Spuds are still wholesaling for similar prices to back then, so how does it add up?

Back in the day the previous generation were equally flabbergasted by what I paid for tractors and machinery, but there is a key difference, they were comparing their fordson major and MF turntable potato harvester with my JD 6900 and grimme1700, massive difference in performance and comfort, but I dont see such a leap forward over the last generation , certainly not to justify the increase in cost.
OMG, Ive turned into a moaning old bloke...

I can well remember a local spud farm getting a new kverneland 2200? 2 row harvester for about 20k, and a similar price for the new same 100 to pull it
Maybe around 1990 and it was a very popular outfit at the time, it was a wet year and this was able to be converted to have a driven axle

Not long ago, you could visit farm sales, and implements ranged from £200 - £1000.
Don't see much for sale these days under £10k.
New 10 ton Easterby tipping trailer cost us £3500 ( 1997 ). Could have bought a 24' flatbed for £2200.
New Ford 6610 was £15k in 1985. Our S/H Grimme Allrounder was £5500..........
Pooh pooh the idea of paying £100k + for a tractor " In another place ", and you get shot down in flames.🤷‍♂️

They can be a bit amateurish 👍
Not the most serious thing but I started getting a Malton market report email, after a few weeks they decided to repeat it every time at 3am.
I am now up to six repeats 😲

It was actually 18 months ago that a sale board appeared, not in a field gateway but just a random place along the roadside. It said Lot 45.7ac. It was placed adjacent to some land owned by a trust and rumour had that it was coming up to sell. The 45ac seemed about right for the total of 3 fields nearby.
I was nominated by the locals and asked for details and was sent info on some grassland 3/4mile further along the road. I queried and asked again for details of the 45ac. Long pause (email) before I got a explanation that not only was the sign in the wrong place but it was printed wrong too. It should have read Lot 4 5.7ac. 🙄
