I’m amazed there are daffodils around already. I had a hunt around here today for some leaves to take a comparison photo. All still below the ground!
They were up and in bud, just bursting, a fortnight ago. Should have taken a picture then. It must be a varietal thing, that patch is always a good month or more earlier than any others.I’m amazed there are daffodils around already. Some varieties are astonishingly early in a sheltered spot, there are some under apple trees in a village garden here already 6" tall they always amaze me by opening at least six weeks before wild ones.I’m amazed there are daffodils around already. Another 2 days to go here. When the sun reaches 25 degrees above horizon is a critical point of the year.
Below that altitude refraction effects bounce a far greater amount of energy back into space - so there is literally a step change for most of UK during February when suddenly the sun feels noticeably stronger because the refraction actually increases the amount of energy hitting a given area, rather than decreasing it.
Obviously at first that's only for a few minutes around noon but the time above 25 degrees rapidly increases into March.

I set it on London as they reach the magic number today.
